Director & Writer: Treasa O’Brien
Treasa O’Brien is a filmmaker and writer from Co. Kerry. She makes documentary and fiction and her films have been screened internationally including in the Lebanon, Mexico, Palestine, Italy, UK and Ireland. Her film N25 won Best Director at the NAHEMI Eat Our Shorts Festival in BFI (2010) and was screened on RTE’s Shortscreen. She has written on film for various journals including Sight & Sound and Film Ireland, and has curated film programmes as Executive Director of Open City Docs Fest, and as a freelance curator at Tate Modern and Artists Space New York, where she showed the work of Irish filmmaker Vivienne Dick. She studied filmmaking in Goldsmiths, London, visual art in Limerick School of Art & Design, and participated in Werner Herzog’s Rogue Film School in New Jersey. She is a PhD Researcher in film practice at Westminster University, with Joshua Oppenheimer and May Ingawanij as her supervisors. She is a member of the pro-choice feminist performance collective Speaking of Imelda. She works and plays between London and Ireland, and is currently working on a new film set in a small town in Ireland.
Co-Director & Writer: Mary Jane O’Leary
Mary Jane O’Leary is a journalist and researcher originally from Cobh, Co. Cork. She recently relocated to Liverpool to carry out a PhD in Sociology and Linguistics and teaches Sociological Theory at John Moores University. She trained as a newspaper reporter in Cork after graduating and worked for Thomas Crosbie Media as an online sub-editor. Later she completed an MA in International Relations at the University of Barcelona and worked with the IBEI Centre for International Studies as a researcher. She lived in Barcelona for six years participating in the 15M anti-austerity movements and general strikes; experiences that greatly influenced her research for the film Eat Your Children. After leaving Barcelona in 2014 Mary Jane worked with charity and community organisations as well as the Anarchist Collective in England. She now lives and works full time in Liverpool.
